I’ve been spending a lot of time at The Metropolitan Museum of Art lately, sharing the opulent China: Through the Looking Glass exhibition with friends, but the museum is always packed. The exhibition, organized by The Costume Institute in collaboration with the Department of Asian Art, opened to the public on May 7, and has drawn more than 350,000 visitors in its first eight weeks. By popular demand, China: Through the Looking Glass has been extended through Labor Day, September 7.

Last week, I was invited to attend an (#EmptyMet) private tour with The Met’s Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan at 8:30 A.M., before the museum opened to the general public.  It is an enviable position to be in, walking through the #emptymet galleries.

Sree Sreenivasan (@sree) is the first Chief Digital Officer at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the Met, he leads a 70-person world-class team on topics he loves: digital, social, mobile, video, apps, email, interactives, data and more. He joined the Met after spending 20+ years at Columbia University as full-time professor at Columbia Journalism School and a year as the university’s first Chief Digital Officer. In 2009, he was named one of AdAge’s 25 media people to follow on Twitter; in 2010 was named one of Poynter’s 35 most influential people in social media; and in 2014, was named one of the most influential Chief Digital Officers by CDO Club. You can find him on Twitter and on the web.

More than 700 people from around the world have participated in this informal  #EmptyMet tour and I highly recommend it. My new Canon ultra wide zoom EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM was the ideal lens to use in the skylit galleries, where we were encouraged to photograph to our heart’s content, and post online with the hashtag #EmptyMet.
