A prolific song-writer, producer, performer and bandleader, Will Calhoun brings his cutting-edge mastery of technology and musicianship to a diverse range of projects. Famous for his Grammy-winning work with Living Colour, Will has recorded, toured and performed with such diverse artists as Living Colour, Mick Jagger, Oumou Sangare’, Mos Def, and Wayne Shorter to name a few. In the late ‘90s, Will formed the groundbreaking band Jungle Funk with Doug Wimbish and Vinx, followed by a Grammy-nominated solo jazz CD in 2000. Native Lands was released in 2005, marrying Will’s far-reaching interests in a genre-bending collection that taps key expressionists from various backgrounds. His forthcoming CD, set to be released in 2013 on Motema Music (www.motema.com), explores his jazz roots and includes Ron Carter, Donald Harrison and Wallace Roney. Not many artists have the vision and artistic energy to be Grammy winners and contribute to so many genres: jazz, rock, hip-hop, ambient, et al, while concurrently producing, touring, creating new projects, working on films and continually pushing the envelope. Will Calhoun has this creative vision, and he is doing an extraordinary job keeping music a spiritual and motivating force in his life.

John Benitez earned a Grammy for Best Latin Performance, on Habana, with Roy Hargrove. In 2001 he released his first album as leader, Descarga in New York. Benitez has performed or recorded with many well-known American and Latin artists including Lucecita Benitez, Justo Betancourt, Wynton Marsalis, Tito Puente, Hilton Ruiz, Chucho Valdez, David Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri and Roy Hargrove’s Grammy award-winning Crisol Band. Benitez has performed as sideman and featured special artist in all of the major jazz festivals and venues, and has recently released a second CD, Purpose. A prolific composer, arranger and producer, he’s also the man Eddie Palmieri dubbed “The greatest bass player in the world.”

Robert Rodriguez has recorded on Jam Miami alongside Chick Corea on Arturo Sandoval’s Trumpet Evolution and on Ray Barretto’s 2005 Grammy-nominated recording Time Is Time Was, which featured Robert’s composition “One for Ray”.

New York Winter Jazz Fest: The Will Calhoun Quartet with Donald Harrison at Zinc Bar on January 7, 2012

The New York Winter Jazz Fest presents The Will Calhoun Quartet with special guest Donald Harrison at Zinc Bar, 82 West Third Street between Thompson and Sullivan in New York on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 9:45pm.

Drummer Will Calhoun has won two GRAMMY awards with the band Living Colour. His latest creation, Native Lands, on Half Note Records, moves into new areas and can be described as “Jazz meets World,” coupled with trance-inducing urban music. This dual disc (CD/DVD) combines Calhoun’s experiences as he marries his far-reaching interests in a genre-bending collection that taps key expressionists from various backgrounds.

Special guest alto saxophonist Donald Harrison exhibits a deep respect for the entire jazz tradition.

But his style also reflects African, Latin and modern influences, the avant-garde, and his own personal experiences. Harrison has been awarded the Arts Council of New Orleans Community Arts Award for his exceptional contributions to the arts community in New Orleans. Jazziz magazine also named him “Person of the Year” because of his longstanding commitment to arts education, and he was named the “Ambassador of Music” by the Big Easy Music Awards.

Bassist Burniss Earl Travis honed his skills with a local orchestra before entering the Houston jazz scene, and his career quickly took off from there. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, the 23-year-old Travis is busily exploring new musical territory.

Hailed by DownBeat magazine as one of the most “multidimensional keyboard players on the scene today” whose music reveals those multiple dimensions in sensual living color, Marc Cary’s continual search for his musical identity has brought him to all four corners of the earth, quenching his thirst to bring forth indigenous music in all its primal forms.
