2013 NYC Winter Jazz Fest: Will Calhoun Performs at Zinc Bar on 1/10, The Bitter End on 1/12

KCC Productions presents the Will Calhoun Trio on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Zinc Bar during the Jazz Connect Conference. The Trio consists of Will Calhoun on drums and indigenous percussion, John Benitez on bass, Robert Rodriguez on piano, and special guest horn TBA. The showcase sets will be at 9:45 and 11:15. A prolific song-writer, producer, performer and bandleader, Will Calhoun brings his cutting-edge mastery of technology and musicianship to a diverse range of projects. Famous for his Grammy-winning work with Living Colour, Will has recorded, toured and performed with such diverse artists as Living Colour, Mick Jagger, Oumou Sangare’, Mos Def, and Wayne Shorter to name a few. In the late ‘90s, Will formed the groundbreaking band Jungle Funk with Doug Wimbish and Vinx, followed by a Grammy-nominated solo jazz CD in 2000. Native Lands was released in 2005, marrying Will’s far-reaching interests in a genre-bending collection that taps key expressionists from various backgrounds. His forthcoming CD, set to be released in 2013 on Motema Music (www.motema.com), explores his jazz roots and includes Ron Carter, Donald Harrison and Wallace Roney. Not many artists have the vision and artistic energy to be Grammy winners and contribute to so many genres: jazz, rock, hip-hop, ambient, et al, while concurrently producing, touring, creating new projects, working on films and continually pushing the envelope. John Benitez earned a Grammy for Best Latin Performance, on Habana, with Roy Hargrove. In 2001 he released his first album as leader, Descarga in New York. Benitez has performed or recorded with many well-known American and Latin artists including Lucecita Benitez, Justo Betancourt, Wynton Marsalis, Tito Puente, Hilton Ruiz, Chucho Valdez, David Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri and Roy Hargrove’s Grammy award-winning Crisol Band. Benitez has performed as sideman and featured special artist in all of the major jazz festivals and venues, and has recently released a second CD, Purpose. A prolific composer, arranger and producer, he’s also the man Eddie Palmieri dubbed “The greatest bass player in the world.”

Robert Rodriguez has recorded on Jam Miami alongside Chick Corea on Arturo Sandoval’s Trumpet Evolution and on Ray Barretto’s 2005 Grammy-nominated recording Time Is Time Was, which featured Robert’s composition “One for Ray”.

Lia Chang: Catch Grammy-winning Drummer Will Calhoun in August at The Iridium, Jazzmobile Summerfest 2012, The Blue Note, Hudson Valley Jazz Festival, and Wimbash

I last caught up with Will Calhoun, the Grammy-winning drummer from Living Colour at Sullivan Hall in May, where he was playing a rock ‘n roll gig with Bernard Fowler, featuring Doug Wimbish and Eric Gales.

Calhoun is in the midst of recording his latest Jazz CD, slated for a 2013 release on Motema Records, which will feature Ron Carter and Donald Harrison. He’s back in New York after performing on the European Tour of the enchanting Malian songstress Oumou Sangare and banjoist Béla Fleck.

Not many artists have the vision and artistic energy to be Grammy winners and contribute to so many genres – jazz, rock, hip-hop, ambient, and more – while concurrently producing, touring, creating new projects, working on films, and continually pushing the envelope. Will Calhoun has this creative vision, and he is doing an extraordinary job keeping music a spiritual and motivating force in his life.

In addition to his work with landmark fusion rock band Living Colour, Calhoun has recorded and/or performed with a diverse array of artists, including B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Jaco Pastorious, Harry Belafonte, Pharoah Sanders, Jack DeJohnette, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, Marcus Miller, Dr. John, Carly Simon, Herb Alpert,Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood, Wayne Shorter (on the 1995 Grammy-winning CD High Life), Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, The Allman Brothers, and more. As a producer, player, and songwriter, he has also worked on Herb Alpert’s Grammy-nominated album Colors (1999), and Mos Def’s The New Danger (2004).

After releasing several solo drum/electronic albums and forming the groundbreaking band Jungle Funk with Doug Wimbish and Vinx in the late ’90s, Calhoun released his first solo jazz CD in 2000, titled The Will Calhoun Quintet: Live at the Blue Note. The disc garnered a Grammy nomination. His latest release, Native Lands (2005), is his follow-up release on Half Note Records, the Blue Note’s in-house record label. Native Lands can be described as jazz meets world music, coupled with trance-inducing urban music. This dual disc (CD/DVD) combines Calhoun’s experiences as he marries his far-reaching interests in a genre-bending collection that taps key expressionists from various backgrounds. Among those contributing are Pharaoh Sanders, Mos Def, Buster Williams, Stanley Jordan, Kevin Eubanks, Marcus Miller and Wallace Roney, as well as Nana Vasconcelos from Brazil and Cheick Tidiane Seck from Mali.

Throughout the month of August you can catch Calhoun performing at The Iridium, Jazzmobile Summerfest 2012, The Blue Note, Hudson Valley Jazz Festival, and Wimbash with a variety of different artists.

The Will Calhoun Trio featuring Marc Cary on keys, Earl Travis on Bass, Will Calhoun on drums and a special guest, will perform on Thursday, August 18th from 7pm-8:30pm in a free concert at Morningside Park, Morningside Ave and West 114th St. in New York. Hosted by Friends of Morningside Park and presented by Jazzmobile in partnership with Maysles Cinema.

Not many artists have the vision and artistic energy to be Grammy winners and contribute to so many genres: jazz, rock, hip-hop, ambient, et al, while concurrently producing, touring, creating new projects, working on films, and continually pushing the envelope. Will Calhoun has this creative vision, and he is doing an extraordinary job keeping music a spiritual and motivating force in his life.

Calhoun’s unique blend of improvisational and hard rock drumming can be found on each of Living Colour’s four Epic releases. As a member of Living Colour, Calhoun received a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance by a group and another Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.

In addition to his work with Living Colour, Calhoun has recorded and/or toured and performed with diverse artists including B.B. Drummer Will Calhoun rocked the Zinc Bar in New York last night with members of his Native Lands Experience band featuring bassist Mark Kelley, saxophonist Marcus Strickland and Marc Cary on keys and piano. After the second set, I caught up with the legendary drummer, who just returned from Prague where he was recording new tracks for LIVING COLOUR’s next release. You can catch him this weekend at Iridium Jazz Club in New York as part of the Stanley Jordan Trio, with Charnett Moffett on bass, from February 19-22. Show times are 8:30pm & 10:30pm. Tickets are $35.
