India was host to one of the oldest living Jewish communities in the world, with roots stretching back to biblical times. The country of India is called Hodu in Hebrew, most commonly recognized from the opening lines of the Megilla Esther on Purim, when King Achashverosh is depicted as ruling a kingdom that stretched “me’hodu v’ad kush” from India (Hodu) to Ethiopia (Kush). The contemporary Jewish community in Calcutta dates back to 1784 when Shalom Cohen arrived from Aleppo, Syria to be the court jeweler of the Nawab of Oudh. The connection between Jewish and Indian culture is a long one.

The roots of this Klezmer-Bhangra Extravaganza concert have little to do with these historical antecedents, and spring from a more personal source. Frank London and Deep Singh are neighbors in New York’s Lower East Side. The pair have played together for both traditional Jewish and Punjabi Sikh weddings, playing bhangra and klezmer music for baraats and khuppah processions. They toured Europe performing Jewish sacred mystical music with Judith Berkson, recorde tsuker-zis with Lorin Skleamberg, and collaborated with writer Glen Berger (Spiderman, A Night in the Old Marketplace) on the apocalyptic psychedelic Bollywood musical, On Words and Onwards. Their dinner parties (replete with massive amounts of overly spicy food, early morning alcohol and ghee fueled percussion jams, and stunt ping pong tricks) are legendary. A benefit for the HONK! Festival of Brass Bands gave them the opportunity to bring together the worlds of klezmer and bhangra party music, and that experience is the impetus for this collaboration. The concert will explore both the ecstatic and the meditative aspects of Jewish and Indian music, and will feature songs by Malkit Singh and Moyshe Oysher. Songs will be sung in multiple languages: Yiddish, Punjabi, Hebrew, Hindi, and English.

Good Night | Good Morning starring Manu Narayan and Seema Rahmani on J. Hurtado’s Top Ten Indian Films of 2012

Good Night | Good Morning starring Manu Narayan (Bombay Dreams, The Love Guru) and Seema Rahmani (Loins of Punjab, Missed Call, Sins), co-written by Sudhish Kamath and Shilpa Rathnam, was named on “J. Hurtado’s Top Ten Indian Films of 2012″ on Twitchfilm.com. The story is about an all-night phone call between two strangers on New Year’s Eve in New York City. Vasanth Santosham and Raja Sen are also featured in the cast.

Manu Narayan and Seema Rahmani in Sudhish Kamath's Good Night | Good Morning.

Manu Narayan and Seema Rahmani in Sudhish Kamath’s Good Night | Good Morning.

J. Hurtado of Twitchfilm.com writes, “In the grand tradition of the French New Wave, Good Night | Good Morning comes to us from a film critic turned filmmaker. Sudhish Kamath, film writer for major Indian periodical, The Hindu, wrote and directed Good Night | Good Morning and made it all happen with minimal cast and crew. The story of an all night phone call between a pair of potential lovers is short and sweet, but resonant in its depiction of the search for love and the strange turns it sometimes takes. Performed entirely in English, this film deserves to be seen by international audiences, as it rivals any Indie romance out there. Turiya, played by Manu Narayan, embodies his lovesick character’s neurosis and blind faith well. He’s able to tap into emotion when necessary without the distraction of visual or editorial trickery, which is impressive.”
Twitchfilm.com: Top Ten Indian Films of 2012 by J. Hurtado (January 7, 2013)

Katherine Matthews of Bollyspice.com writes, “Good Night, Good Morning trades in all sorts of pop culture references that are familiar, allow us to immediately identify with the two main characters, Turiya (Manu Narayan) and Moira (Seema Rahmani), who meet by chance on New Year’s Eve in New York, and spend the night carrying on a long and far-reaching conversation by telephone, Turiya in a car with his three friends, on their way back to Philidelphia, and Moira, spending the night in a hotel on a stop-over on her way to Mumbai. The dialogues (as befits an all night conversation), written by Kamath and Shilpa Rathnam, are sharp and crisp and pointedly wonderful. Images of New York, shot in black and white, and set against a smooth, jazzy soundtrack, give this film a hip, contemporary, cosmopolitan feel, allowing Kamath to create an intense environment that allows us to focus on the discussion taking place.”

After much-acclaimed success with Varli Magazine, the Varli Food Festival, and the Varli Cook-Off, the Varli brand continues to expand its reach with the first annual Varli Culinary Awards on November 15, 2012, at The Altman Building, 135 W. 18th St. in New York.

The evening will be hosted by internationally acclaimed Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, along with Bombay Dream star Manu Narayan (The Love Guru), fresh from his electrifying turn as Richard Roma in La Jolla Playhouse’s revival of Glengarry Glen Ross.

The highly esteemed panel of judges includes celebrity judges, renowned food correspondents, and culinary experts such as Vikas Khanna, Jehangir Mehta, Monica Bhide, Rajesh Bhardwaj, Prasad Chirnomula, Hari Nayak.

This revolutionary concept will be the first global awards event honoring the best culinary talent in an array of categories related to Indian cuisine. “It was time to give credit where credit’s due. We really wanted to recognize and applaud the contributions and amazing achievements of Indian chefs, restaurateurs, and key influencers on the international culinary stage,” says Varli Singh, founder of the Varli brand.
In continuation of Varli’s mission to universally promote Indian cuisine, contestants spaning the U.S., India, Middle East, and Europe will compete in numerous categories including “Best Chef of the Year”, “Best Cookbook”, and “Best Restaurant”. Awards are divided into three different types based on the complexity of judging, and competitiveness of the contestant pool: “People’s Choice” categories (voting began on July 04, 2012), categories determined by a ‘Live Competition and/or a “Panel of Judges” and “Varli’s Choice”. There will also be a ‘Public Recipe Competition’ where amateur cooks from around the world can submit any original rice-based recipe (as a tribute to the event’s title sponsor, Indian Star Basmati Rice) for consideration and win the chance to participate in an exciting cook-off in front of culinary greats.

Varli has also partnered with Magic Bus, an India-based charity helping to change the lives of children through sports, and a portion of proceeds will be donated to this inspiring cause.
