Lia Chang: Kim Yancey Stars as Dr. May Edward Chinn at Castillo Theatre, February 26-28


Kim Yancey stars as the title character in Dr. May Edward Chinn, a biographical drama written by Laurence Holder, at Castillo Theatre, 543 W. 42nd Street in New York, from February 26-28. Directed by Imani and presented by Woodie King, Jr.’s National Black Touring Circuit, the performances are part of a month-long lineup in Woodie King, Jr.’s Black History Month Play Festival, which runs from February 5 – 28, 2010.

Born in 1895, Dr. Chinn was the first black female intern at Harlem Hospital, and for many years the only black female physician in Harlem. She attended Columbia University Teachers’ College, majoring in music; and for a period in the 1920′s was a piano accompanist for singer Paul Robeson. Dr. Chinn was a pioneer in early cancer detection and was invited to work at the Strang Clinic, where she stayed for almost 30 years. She died in 1980.

Dr. May Edward Chinn features costumes by Ali Turns and lighting by Antoinette Tynes. There will be a post play discussion with Dr Lenora Fulani, Dr Vernille Lillie and Dr Ethel Walker on February 28th after the performance.

She has been documenting her colleagues and contemporaries in the arts, fashion and journalism since making her stage debut as Liat in the National Tour of South Pacific, with Robert Goulet and Barbara Eden.

Selections of Lia’s archive of Asian Pacific Americans in the arts, fashion, journalism, politics and space are now in the newly created LIA CHANG THEATER PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO in the ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN PERFORMING ARTS COLLECTION housed in the Library of Congress Asian Division’s Asian American Pacific Islander Collection.
