Signature Theatre’s Revival of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson Leads 28th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards Nominations

Congratulations to Signature Theatre’s Revival of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, which has been nominated for 6 Lucille Lortel Awards including Outstanding Revival, Outstanding Director for Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Outstanding Lead Actress for Roslyn Ruff, Outstanding Lead Actor for Brandon J. Dirden, Outstanding Featured Actor for Chuck Cooper, and Outstanding Lighting Design for Rui Rita.

Signature’s Off-Broadway Revival of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, helmed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, runs October 30 -December 9, 2012

This year the Outstanding Body of Work Award, which recognizes a significant contribution to Off-Broadway, will be presented to Theatre Development Fund. Outstanding Alternative Theatrical Experience has been awarded to Signature Theatre’s Old Hats, created and performed by Bill Irwin and David Shiner, with music by and featuring Nellie McKay.

This year’s special award recipients include Todd Haimes, Artistic Director of the Roundabout Theatre Company, who will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Neil LaBute, who will be inducted onto the famed Playwrights’ Sidewalk in front of the Lucille Lortel Theatre. A cocktail reception honoring the nominees will take place on Monday, April 22, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00pm EST at The Library at The Public, 425 Lafayette Street.

The Lortel Awards will be handed out on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at NYU Skirball Center beginning at 7:00pm EST, and hosted by acclaimed stage and screen actors Aasif Mandvi and Maura Tierney. This year’s event will once again benefit The Actors Fund.

Saffron Burrows, Eisa Davis, Glenn Fitzgerald, Gilles Marini and Darren Pettie are featured in Melissa James Gibson’s affecting and witty new play, “This,” which begins previews at the Center Theatre Group/Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles on July 30, opens August 7 and continues through August 28, 2011. Daniel Aukin directs.

The scenic design is by Louisa Thompson, costume design by Jessica Pabst, lighting design by Matt Frey, original sound design by Matt Tierney and original music by Peter Eldridge.

At the center of “This” is Jane (Burrows), a widow and single mom, who along with her circle of three friends, is warily approaching “middle age.” As Jane’s long time friends — a jazz singer and carpenter struggling as new parents and an eccentric mnemonist, attempt to help Jane come to terms with life without her husband, they begin to realize the unhappiness and lack of fulfillment in their own lives.

Denise Burse as Claretha Jenkins in House of Payne’s “Payneful Visit”

Denise Burse is most familiar to television audiences as Claretha Jenkins on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, the 2011 NAACP Award recipient for Outstanding Comedy Series. In the current season of House of Payne, Claretha reveals she has leukemia.

Ms. Burse can be seen in Bruce Beresford’s Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding, a new film starring Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Catherine Keener, Chase Crawford and Kyle MacLachlan, scheduled for release this year.

Lia Chang is an actor, a performance and fine art botanical photographer, and an award-winning multi-platform journalist.

As a photographer and videographer, Lia collaborates with artists, organizations and companies in establishing their documentary photo archive and social media presence. She has been documenting her colleagues and contemporaries in the arts, fashion and journalism since making her stage debut as Liat in the National Tour of South Pacific, with Robert Goulet and Barbara Eden. Lia currently plays Nurse Lia on “One Life to Live”. She has appeared in Wolf, New Jack City, A Kiss Before Dying, King of New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Last Dragon, Taxman and “New York Undercover”.

Selections of Lia’s archive of Asian Pacific Americans in the arts, fashion, journalism, politics and space are now in the newly created LIA CHANG THEATER PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO in the ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN PERFORMING ARTS COLLECTION housed in the Library of Congress Asian Division’s Asian American Pacific Islander Collection.

Lia Chang: Angela’s Mixtape Opening Night

Performances are Mondays through Saturdays at 8pm through May 2. Tickets are $20 for general admission (including students and seniors), with a $35 reserved premium ticket also available. New Georges and Hip-Hop Theater Festival present Eisa Davis’ Angela’s Mixtape, directed by Liesl Tommy, at the Ohio Theatre, 66 Wooster St, New York from April 6-May 2. The cast features Kim Brockington, Denise Burse, Eisa Davis, Ayesha Ngaujah and Linda Powell.

Using the rhythms of music and memory, Eisa tells the story of a radical upbringing on the dividing line between Oakland and Berkeley, California– in a family that includes her aunt, professor and activist Angela Davis. Time shifts between the 70s, 80s, and 90s as smoothly as a DJ fading from song to song. Each track, each memory, has a built-in switch to the next, for theatrical momentum that keeps on building. The music crosses styles and decades, but it’s hip-hop and a b-girl stance that keeps the piece bouncing in the present.

This production is a joint world premiere with Synchronicity Performance Group, Atlanta. With design by Clint Ramos, Sarah Sidman, Jessica Jahn and Jane Shaw. Performances are Monday – Saturdays at 8pm.
Opening night is April 9 at 7pm.
