Award-winning theater artist Rachel Klein returns to Dixon Place with the world premiere of her latest extravaganza, Symphony of Shadows: A Tale From the Land Beyond the Veil, Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays in June. The performance schedule is June 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 @ 7:30. Dixon Place is located at 161A Chrystie Street in New York. This movement-based spectacular tells the story of a woman combating a variety of sleep disorders, phantasmagorical night terrors, hypnotic horrors, and other, visually stunning conjurings from the subconscious depths of her own disturbed mind. Symphony of Shadows merges striking elements of circus and aerial arts, dance and movement, burlesque, and operatic productions to vividly illustrate its storyline in a genre-defying form which “evokes a live-action silent film.” Symphony of Shadows was commissioned by Dixon Place as a world premiere as part of the theater’s Monde Cane original works series.

Starring the expressionistic theatrics of the Rachel Klein Theater Ensemble (The Tragedy of Maria Macabre, Act Up! At Howl Festival), aerialists from the House of Yes (Brooklyn’s foremost aerial venue—Circus of Circus, Caligula), dancers from Martha Graham Company II, Alvin Ailey, the Love Show (Nutcracker: Rated R) and Desert Sin Dance Company (Museé de Femmes at the Zipper Factory) along with acrobatic interludes from Bro Circus (Oh! You Pretty Things at (le) Poisson Rouge, Blunderland at Red Lotus Room), an original concerto by Sean Hagerty (Steampunk Haunted House at Abrons Art Center), and a live electric string orchestra. Symphony of Shadows will be the company’s largest production to date which includes a cast of 25 dancers, aerialists, musicians, a contortionist, and silent film style actors.

Rachel Klein (Director, Choreographer, Costume Designer) is a director, choreographer, producer, and costume/production designer. Miss Klein established the RKP ensemble in 2007 with her adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost and since has worked with RKP and other collaborators (including Junta Juleil Theatricals, the Jackie Factory, Disgraced Productions, HQ Rep, the House of Yes, Bluebox Productions, and Razors Edge Productions) to build and develop the full length productions The Tragedy of Maria Macabre, Metro, All Kinds of Shifty Villains, Sir Sheever, Aenigma, Go-Go Killers!, Hound, Princes of Darkness, Circus of Circus, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Lizardman, a Musical. Shorter works and dance pieces include: Our Prison, La Enferma, Medusa, Sisters of the Moon, Sweeter Than Wine, Killer Workout, Beat Girl, Rocky Horror at Oh! You Pretty Things, London Calling, March of the Black Queen, ACT Up! Ballet: Why?, and Night of the Living Dolls. The Rachel Klein Theater Ensemble’s choreographic work has been presented all over the city at several venues, festivals, art galleries, and nightlife events including the Kitchen, Dixon Place, Theater for the New City, DUMBO Dance Festival, Night of 1000 Stevies, the Highline Ballroom, La MaMa, Banzai! at the Red Lotus Room, legendary rock ‘n roll club Don Hill’s, the Hiro Ballroom, the Bushwick Site Fest, Bushwick Open Studios Festival, the World Famous Bob’s Give Thanks!, Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO, the House of Yes, HOWL Festival, and Off-Broadway at the Bleecker Street Theater. Sean Hagerty (Composer, Musician) is a composer, sound designer, and violinist, specializing in live electronics and music for theater and dance. Upon arriving in New York, he found himself writing arrangements for the Broadway cast of Sweeney Todd, performed at the 20th Annual Easter Bonnet Festival. He also performed with the cast, playing violin on his arrangement of “Lady, Your Roof Brings Me Down” at the Bowery Ballroom.

Symphony of Shadows features a story by Rachel Klein and Sean Gill, Costume design by Rachel Klein, Kae Burke, and Make Fun Studios, and will be stage managed by Marina Steinberg. Starring Elizabeth Stewart, Michael Porsche, Danielle Marie Fusco, and Eric Schmalenberger. For 30 years, BD Wong has been obsessed with the one-man musical Herringbone, which features a book by Tom Cone, music by Skip Kennon and lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh, and was first produced in New York at Playwright’s Horizons in a memorable 1982 production starring David Rounds.

Wong has headlined four critically-acclaimed productions of the ambitious musical – in which he enacts, sings and dances at least 11 characters – at the Williamstown Theatre Festival (2007), McCarter Theatre (2008), and La Jolla Playhouse (2010), all directed by Tony Award-winner Roger Rees (Nicholas Nickleby, Peter And The Starcatcher). Wong also starred in another earlier production at the American Musical Theatre Festival in 1994.

Dixon Place is presenting BD Wong’s tour-de-force performance in this difficult-to-perform musical, which is rarely revived.

Wong, best known for his Tony Award winning performance in M. Butterfly and his role in the long running hit series “Law & Order: SVU,” will appear in Herringbone to benefit Dixon Place for two performances only: Monday May 21, and Tuesday May 22, at 7:00pm. The production, which will be recorded live for a future CD release, will be Wong’s first appearance in New York of the material, timed with the 30th anniversary of the original New York production. Herringbone is written as a traditional two-act musical with a score of more than 14 songs and 11 characters. The conceit of a single performer enacting all of the characters underlines its theme of the human struggle to negotiate the light and dark sides within.

In the musical, set in Alabama during the Great Depression, 8-year-old George Nookin is possessed by the vengeful spirit of Lou, a jaded hoofer who was murdered by Lou’s partner in a Vaudeville act, Chicken Mosely. George’s parents, Arthur and Louise, are torn asunder by George’s astonishing new ability to sing and dance, shlepping across the country as Lou seduces them into believing that exploiting George’s newfound talent is the family’s ticket on the train out of hard times. Wong plays George, Lou, Mosely, Arthur, Louise, as well as George’s Grandmother, a floozie hotel clerk, and a host of other supporting characters.

Reprising their work on this project from the Williamstown Theatre Festival, McCarter Theatre and La Jolla Playhouse productions are Darren Lee (choreography), Dan Lipton (music direction), Scott Lehrer and Leon Rothenberg (sound design), and William Ivey Long (costumes).

BD Wong won the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Clarence Derwent, Theater World and Tony Awards for his performance in M. BUTTERFLY. He has appeared in more than 20 films and on television in six seasons of HBO’s “OZ,” eleven seasons of “LAW & ORDER: SVU,” and the inaugural season of the critically-acclaimed NBC drama “AWAKE”.

Rachel Klein Productions’ morbid dance drama, The Tragedy of Maria Macabre, which premiered to a soldout house at Dixon Place earlier this month, returns for two encore performances on Saturday, March 19th at the Access Theater at 380 Broadway in New York at 6pm and 9pm. Upon dying, Maria Macabre is not granted eternal slumber, but instead a whirling, kaleidoscopic carnival of horrors: a morbid funhouse where humanity is stripped away and a permanent place in the gruesome chorus line is all but assured. The Tragedy of Maria Macabre is a ghoulish movement and visual based theater piece that uses dancers and physical actors to create a world of fantasy and spectacle. It is a work of theater, dance, and performance art.

The Tragedy of Maria Macabre stars Abigail Hawk (from CBS’s “Bluebloods” with Tom Selleck), Danielle Marie Fusco (Martha Graham Company, Joyce Soho) Eric Schmalenberger (the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, the Citizens Band) and RKP regulars: Elizabeth Stewart, Michael Porsche, Megan O’Connor, Preston Burger, Freddy Mancilla, and Brian Rubiano. Conceived and Directed by Rachel Klein (Circus of Circus at the House of Yes, Princes of Darkness at Theater for the New City, Hound at Planet Connections Theater Festivity). Story by Rachel Klein and Sean Gill. Featuring Music by Borut Krzisnik (Peter Greenaways’ The Tulse Luper Suitcases) Costume and Wig Design by Rachel Klein, Makeup Design by Anita Rundles, and Sound Design by Sean Gill. Rachel Klein Productions (RKP) is a NYC-based theater company that communicates its artistic vision through visual storytelling techniques. Relying on innovative performances and lavish design elements, RKP’s ensemble of actors, dancers, circus performers, and performance artists convey a highly stylized representation of reality that is much more bold and often fantastical. RKP aims to create art that explores and elicits genuine human emotion, which is amplified through the actions and reactions of its characters, allowing the audience to simultaneously identify with the human condition and enjoy the artistic qualities of the performance.

Rachel Klein Productions has produced several full-length plays (both movement and text based) including Metro, Sir Sheever, Aenigma, and Go-Go Killers! and co-produced Hound, All Kind of Shifty Villains, and Stage Blood is Never Enough. The Rachel Klein Theater Dancers have throughout New York in different festivals, art gallery openings, and nightlife events including the opening number to Night of 1,000 Stevies (20th anniversary), the Highline Ballroom, La MaMa Moves! at La MaMa E.T.C. in 2009 and 2010, Dixon Place, the premier of Banzai! at the Red Lotus Room, Low Life @ HOWL Festival, (le) Poisson Rouge, the House of Yes, Rated X at Don Hills, the Hiro Ballroom, the Bushwick Site Fest at 3rd Ward, the Bushwick Open Studios Festival, the World Famous Bob’s Give Thanks!, Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO, the NY Downtown Clown Review, and Off-Broadway at the Bleecker Street Theater (45 Bleecker, Main Theater).

Lia Chang is an actor, performance and fine art botanical photographer, and an award-winning multimedia journalist.

As a photographer and videographer, Lia collaborates with artists, organizations and companies in establishing their documentary photo archive and social media presence. She has been documenting her colleagues and contemporaries in the arts, fashion and journalism since making her stage debut as Liat in the National Tour of South Pacific, with Robert Goulet and Barbara Eden.

Selections of Lia’s archive of Asian Pacific Americans in the arts, fashion, journalism, politics and space are now in the newly created LIA CHANG THEATER PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO in the ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN PERFORMING ARTS COLLECTION housed in the Library of Congress Asian Division’s Asian American Pacific Islander Collection.
