The Residency One: David Henry Hwang Series continues during the 2013-14 season with the previously announced world premiere of his latest work Kung Fu, directed by Leigh Silverman. Residency One is the continuation of Signature’s core Playwright-in-Residence program that produces a series of plays from the body of work of one accomplished writer.

Signature’s Legacy Program, a homecoming for past Signature Playwrights-in-Residence, will feature the world premiere of Edward Albee’s new play Laying an Egg, directed by David Esbjornson. Signature devoted its 1993-94 Season to Edward Albee, with the world premiere of Fragments, New York premieres of Marriage Play, Counting the Ways and Listening, Sand: Box, The Sandbox, and Finding the Sun. Albee returned to Signature in the 2001-2002 10th Anniversary Season for the presentation of Edward Albee’s Occupant, later also staged in the 2007-2008 Season. His play The Lady from Dubuque was presented at the new Pershing Square Signature Center as part of the Inaugural 2012 season and was extended for three weeks.

The Legacy Program will also include the New York premiere of How I Learned What I Learned by August Wilson. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who directed Signature’s acclaimed production of Wilson’s The Piano Lesson this fall, will appear in Wilson’s one-man show, with Todd Kreidler directing. Signature’s 2006-07 Season was devoted to the late August Wilson, with productions of his plays Seven Guitars, Two Trains Running and King Hedley II. Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Piano Lesson was presented in the 2012-13 season and was extended for six weeks.

Residency Five is Signature’s newest program, a groundbreaking program that provides a group of playwrights with the full range of Signature’s resources for a period of five years to create and produce new work, and guarantees each playwright a minimum of three world premieres at The Pershing Square Signature Center. Residency Five enables a diverse community of playwrights to build bodies of work, and provides them with a significant cash award, full health benefits and a stipend to attend theatre. Annie Baker, Martha Clarke, Will Eno, Katori Hall, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan and Regina Taylor are the program’s current playwrights.

The 2013-14 Season will feature the previously announced World Premiere of Regina Taylor’s —- and potatoes, which will be directed by the playwright, along with the world premiere of Cheri, conceived, directed and choreographed by Martha Clarke, and new plays from Will Eno, whose Title and Deed was extended for two weeks during Signature’s Inaugural Season at The Pershing Square Signature Center, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.

The season offers an exciting cross-section of our three Residency programs as we introduce new artists and collaborators and welcome home Signature veterans. It is a rich and rewarding season, and we look forward to sharing it with our growing community here at The Pershing Square Signature Center.”

Signature’s current season continues with The Dance and the Railroad by David Henry Hwang (extended through March 24), Old Hats created and performed by Bill Irwin and David Shiner (extended through May 9) and The Mound Builders by Lanford Wilson, which has been extended through April 14.

Last night, I saw an alumni night preview performance of Signature Theatre’s (James Houghton, Founding Artistic Director; Erika Mallin, Executive Director) riveting revival of Edward Albee’s The Lady from Dubuque, directed by David Esbjornson, and featuring Tony Award winner Jane Alexander in the title role, with Catherine Curtin (Love, Janis) as Lucinda, Michael Hayden (Festen, Cabaret) as Sam, Peter Francis James (The Merchant of Venice) as Oscar, Tricia Paoluccio (A Strange and Separate People) as Carol, Laila Robins (Frozen) as Jo, Thomas Jay Ryan (In the Next Room or the vibrator play) as Edgar and C.J. Wilson (Festen, Henry IV) as Fred.

The production began preview perfomances on February 14, with a March 5 opening night, and has been extended through April 1, 2012 as the inaugural production in The End Stage Theatre at the Company’s dazzling new Frank Gehry-designed home The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street between Dyer and 10th Avenues).

After the performance, there was a delightful cocktail and dessert reception with the castmembers in the cafe. Thanks to James Houghton, Erika Mallin, Allison Bressi and the entire staff of Signature Theatre for a lovely evening at the theater in their new home.

In The Lady from Dubuque, Sam and Jo are entertaining their friends during a late night party with a round of Twenty Questions and another round of drinks. When an unexpected guest and her mysterious companion arrive, the question “Who are you?” gains a whole new and desperate meaning.

The design team includes John Arnone (Scenic Design), Elizabeth Hope Clancy (Costume Design), David Lander (Lighting Design), John Gromada (Sound Design) and Rick Sordelet (Fight Direction). The production stage manager is David H. Lurie and the stage manager is Andrew C. Gottlieb. Casting is by Telsey + Company.

About SIGNATURE THEATRE
Founded in 1991 by James Houghton, Signature Theatre exists to honor and celebrate the playwright. Signature makes an extended commitment to a playwright’s body of work, and during this journey, the writer is engaged in every aspect of the creative process. Signature is the first theatre company to devote an entire season to the work of a single playwright, including re-examinations of past writings as well as New York and world premieres. By championing in-depth explorations of a living playwright’s body of work, the Company delivers an intimate and immersive journey into the playwright’s singular vision.

Signature has presented entire seasons of the work of Edward Albee, Lee Blessing, Horton Foote, Maria Irene Fornes, John Guare, Bill Irwin, Adrienne Kennedy, Tony Kushner, Romulus Linney, Charles Mee, Arthur Miller, the Negro Ensemble Company, Sam Shepard, Paula Vogel, August Wilson and Lanford Wilson. Signature remains deeply committed to season-long residencies, and during the company’s tenth and fifteenth anniversaries, Signature introduced the Legacy Program. The Legacy Program invites past Playwrights-in-Residence back to Signature through two series: the Signature Series, which presents “signature,” or more well-known works; and the Premiere Series, which presents New York and world premieres.

I am a proud alumni of the Signature Theatre Company, having appeared in Sam Shepard’s Chicago, directed by Joe Chaikin at The Public in Signature Theatre’s Sam Shepard season in 1996. A selection of my rehearsal photographs taken during that production are in Signature Theatre Company’s limited edition book, “Signature Theatre Company The First 20 Years: A Celebration,” which features a treasure trove of rehearsal, portrait and production images of the plays produced during the first 20 years of The Company.

The Pershing Square Signature Center will serve as the artistic home for as many as 9 playwrights at any one time, fostering a dynamic creative community where playwrights will engage directly with audiences and one another.

From New York to Los Angeles on Monday, June 20, 2011, Project1Voice’s inaugural event –1 Voice, 1 Play, 1 Day will feature multiple staged readings of Alice Childress’ classic play Trouble in Mind. André De Shields, Leslie Uggams, LaChanze and Bill Irwin will appear in the New York reading directed by Charles Randolph‐Wright. Peter Coyote and John Mahoney are cast in the San Francisco and Chicago productions respectively. LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Roger Robinson are slated for the Los Angeles event while Irma P. Hall will head the cast in DeSoto, TX. Petronia Paley will direct the reading at Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ.

Project1Voice, founded by New York‐based actor/producer Erich McMillan McCall (Chicago, The Who’sTommy) is an organization created to preserve the legacy of African‐American theatres and playwrights.

1Voice, 1Play, 1Day is a national day of celebration that not only honors the late great playwright’s seminal work, but also highlights African‐American theatre companies that are struggling for their very existence.

Written in 1955, TROUBLE IN MIND is a powerfully incendiary and satiric drama based on the conflict of not compromising one’s artistic integrity. This play within a play follows the journey of a mixed‐raced cast in 1957 as they embark upon rehearsals for a racially charged play. Childress shows the actors’ complaints, directors’ frustration and even with the well‐meaning efforts of theater professionals to overcome their racial feelings. As the play unfolds each character is revealed, along with their cavalier approach to the scripts they hold. There is so much humor that the playwright’s theme within the theme will leave today’s modern audience marveling at how insightful and fresh the play feels today. Trouble in Mind was scheduled to make it to Broadway before A Raisin in the Sun. However the project was shelved when Childress refused to make the ending more upbeat and therefore more palatable for white audiences. The play has still to today, never gone to Broadway. In addition to featuring nationally renowned artists, the 1Voice, 1Play, 1Day readings of Trouble in Mind will also showcase the talents of local actors at eighteen (18) participating theatres in the following cities:

About the playwright
Born in Charleston, SC in 1912 and raised in Harlem, playwright Alice Childress began her career as an actress with the American Negro Theatre. She wrote over 17 plays including Florence, Gold Through The Trees, Wine in the Wilderness, Trouble In Mind, Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story In Black And White and Let’s Hear It For The Queen. For a brief period Childress expanded her writing from plays to novels. She wrote three children’s novels, A Hero Ain’t Nothing but a Sandwich, which was made into a film in 1978, Rainbow Jordan and Those other People. After a lifetime of giving the American Theatre work grounded in social justice that offered authentic portraits of African Americans, particularly African American women, Childress died of cancer in 1994. (Permission to perform Trouble in Mind is granted by Flora Roberts, Inc. 275 Seventh Ave. New York,
NY 10001).
