Hosted by The Triangle Media Group, the 2008/2009 Biennial Global Awards evening is an exclusive, by invitation only Academic Lecture & Awards Presentation Ceremony. The Awards highlight the crème de la crème of South Asian talent in the global mainstream media. Based on the academic motive behind their work, the selection focuses on a two year period of observation, analysis and research on the works of all the nominees.
Samrat Chakrabarti, who is also an award-winning musician, is being honored with the 2010 TMG Award for Global Achievers in the category of Film, TV and Drama, for his outstanding body of work over the last two years as an actor.
Best know for his featured roles in Amyn Kaderali’s Kissing Cousins, Shut Up and Sing and Spike Lee’s She Hate Me, the British born, New York based actor has been all over the map lately for his work in film and television, with roles in the upcoming Italian production Behind the Bodice alongside Irrfan Khan, the Bengali language film Dwando, the Indian independent film Bombay Summer, the American independent film Loins of Punjab Presents, and even a cameo in a new production from Bollywood’s Yash Raj films starring John Abraham. Television audiences may be familiar with his work on Law & Order (NBC), The Sopranos (HBO), Love Monkey (CBS) Hope and Faith (ABC), and Damages (FX). The accomplished musician has numerous awards to his credit, including a U.S. CARA for Best Original Pop/Rock Song, for his composition, “What’s It all About.”
Chakrabarti was named as one of the Fresh Faces at TIFF by thestar.com, for his role in Claire McCarthy’s The Waiting City, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. Linda Barnard of thestar.com wrote, “The high point of The Waiting City, about an Australian couple in Calcutta to adopt a child, is the lively and hilarious performance of Samrat Chakrabarti as Krishna, a meddlesome worker at the hotel where the Aussies stay. Befriending them and inserting himself into their lives, he digs out their secrets and gives unsolicited advice, in what seems like a typical Bollywood comic turn by an Indian actor.”
“I am extremely honored to be a recipient of the 2010 TMG Award in the category of ACTING. I feel lucky, that I get to continuously play a diverse range of roles and continue to tell stories on a global scale. The world is getting smaller, and as an actor, I think is important to tell powerful stories that go beyond race or culture. I feel humbled and blessed, that I get to work on unique projects that tell stories which focus on the ultimate race: the human race,” said Chakrabarti. Click here for Samrat’s reel.
TMG which predominantly consists of Law, Media & Politics Graduates, biennially celebrates, honors and recognizes South Asian achievement in the global media. Work of those with a legal, academic or political aim is the main criteria for selection. The awards are announced by Professor & Media Lawyer David Flint from Sydney and presented by Haresh Sood, a local Actor, Teacher and Lawyer who is the Global Ambassador of TMG who also heads the entire awards.
Previous winners include Actresses Aishwarya Rai and Shabana Azmi, filmmakers Farah Khan and Jagmohan Mundhra and Politician Manjula Paul and Haresh Sood after which he was made the Ambassador of the awards in 2005.
