A prolific song-writer, producer, performer and bandleader, Will Calhoun brings his cutting-edge mastery of technology and musicianship to a diverse range of projects. Famous for his Grammy-winning work with Living Colour, Will has recorded, toured and performed with such diverse artists as Living Colour, Mick Jagger, Oumou Sangare’, Mos Def, and Wayne Shorter to name a few. In the late ‘90s, Will formed the groundbreaking band Jungle Funk with Doug Wimbish and Vinx, followed by a Grammy-nominated solo jazz CD in 2000. Native Lands was released in 2005, marrying Will’s far-reaching interests in a genre-bending collection that taps key expressionists from various backgrounds. His forthcoming CD, set to be released in 2013 on Motema Music (www.motema.com), explores his jazz roots and includes Ron Carter, Donald Harrison and Wallace Roney. Not many artists have the vision and artistic energy to be Grammy winners and contribute to so many genres: jazz, rock, hip-hop, ambient, et al, while concurrently producing, touring, creating new projects, working on films and continually pushing the envelope. Will Calhoun has this creative vision, and he is doing an extraordinary job keeping music a spiritual and motivating force in his life.

John Benitez earned a Grammy for Best Latin Performance, on Habana, with Roy Hargrove. In 2001 he released his first album as leader, Descarga in New York. Benitez has performed or recorded with many well-known American and Latin artists including Lucecita Benitez, Justo Betancourt, Wynton Marsalis, Tito Puente, Hilton Ruiz, Chucho Valdez, David Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri and Roy Hargrove’s Grammy award-winning Crisol Band. Benitez has performed as sideman and featured special artist in all of the major jazz festivals and venues, and has recently released a second CD, Purpose. A prolific composer, arranger and producer, he’s also the man Eddie Palmieri dubbed “The greatest bass player in the world.”

Robert Rodriguez has recorded on Jam Miami alongside Chick Corea on Arturo Sandoval’s Trumpet Evolution and on Ray Barretto’s 2005 Grammy-nominated recording Time Is Time Was, which featured Robert’s composition “One for Ray”.

Lia Chang Party Photos: Richard Atkinson’s DOGS LIE, Starring Samrat Chakrabarti, Frank Boyd and Ewa Da Cruz

I was welcomed into the engaging sphere of Dogs Lie director Richard Atkinson, when he invited me to the pre-launch party for the Vanguard Cinema release of his latest indie thriller starring Samrat Chakrabarti, Frank Boyd and Ewa Da Cruz on Monday, April 23, 2012, at the elegant Wall Street apartment of co-writer Ronnie Cohen and her husband Larry.

Dogs Lie is based on an Off-Off-Broadway play written by Ronnie Cohen and Jane Beale, and the pair collaborated with director Richard Atkinson on adapting it for the screen.

Dogs Lie scored two awards, for “Best Film” (USA) and the “Feature Film Audience Award,” at the 2011 ITN Distribution Film and New Media Festival in New York. Dogs Lie won “Honorable Mention” at the Los Angeles Movie Awards 2011 and was an “Official Selection” at The Big Apple Film Festival (BAFF) in NY, the La Femme International Film Festival in LA, and the Filmi SE Asian Film Festival in Toronto, where it was the “showcase feature.”

Before arriving at the party, Atkinson caught up with Samrat Chakrabarti, who was en route to attend the screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, to hand deliver his “hot off the presses” DVD of Dogs Lie. Chakrabarti plays Iqbal Khani, a likeable, conscientious clinician and romantic opportunist in the film.

Frank Boyd, who stars opposite Chakrabarti as Josh Logan, a clinician who is a compulsive jokester with a competitive streak, can currently be seen at The Public Theater in Elevator Repair Service’s GATZ, the award-winning, critically lauded theatrical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which has been extended through May 13.

Boyd is also a company member of the TEAM, the Theatre of the Emerging American Moment. The New York City based theater company dedicated to dissecting and celebrating the experience of living in America today, is holding its Hunka Hunka Burnin Benefit on May 10, at the New York City Fire Museum, 278 Spring St. in New York. Click here for tickets and here to see their exciting lineup of 2012-2013 theatrical projects.

In Dogs Lie, Boyd and Chakrabarti play clinicians thrown together with eight patients at a luxury NY sleep clinic for a night of monitoring and observation. They are both drawn to the beautiful Lucia ( Ewa Da Cruz), a patient, who finds herself the center of attention as her life seemingly spins out of control. Nothing is quite as it seems, and as the night progresses dark secrets are revealed. Romance, blackmail and murder ensue as humor and irreverence give way to devious self interest.
