Today, I was in the mood for a good pastrami sandwich. I popped into The Shop at Andaz, located at the corner of 41st St. and 5th Ave, and discovered that several regular menu items -the Katz’s Pastrami Sandwich, the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich, the Tomato Soup and the Turkey Chili Soup, are now available for takeout.

On a recent Saturday afternoon, I made my way to Porchetta, a little storefront on E. 7th between Avenue A and First Ave for a taste of their divine namesake dish.

The pork loin is wrapped in pork belly, highly seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices, garlic, sage, rosemary and wild fennel pollen in the classic Roman tradition, trussed up, then roasted for six hours.

The result: luscious, tender, moist and juicy. My porchetta sandwich was served on a Sullivan St. Bakery ciabatta roll.

I also had a side of crispy potatoes and burnt ends, and a fresh lemonade. I was in seventh heaven, you will be too. Porchetta is setup for takeout, but there is also a counter, several stools and benches outside to sit and enjoy.
Porchetta is my latest obsession.
