On Monday May 7, 2012, Working Theater presents a night of the poetry of 2011 US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winner Philip Levine featuring guest readers Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Jeffrey Eugenides, André De Shields, Gene Gillette and Lisa Ramirez, at the 32BJ SEIU 5th Floor Conference Center, 25 West 18th Street, 5th Floor (between 5th and 6th Aves) in New York at 7pm.

On Monday, May 7th at 7pm, WNYC’s The Greene Space and Theater Communications Group will welcome Tony award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang, whose latest Broadway comedy Chinglish received 3 Drama Desks nods today – Outstanding Play for Hwang, Outstanding Actress in a Play for Jennifer Lim and Outstanding Set Design for David Korins. The Greene Space is located at 44 Charlton Street at Varick Street in New York.

This evening will feature a conversation with Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public Theater in New York and readings by Hwang with guests Brian d’Arcy James, BD Wong, Jennifer Lim and Francis Jue. The event will be followed by a book signing including Hwang’s newly published play from TCG Books, Chinglish, which received its Broadway premiere in fall 2011 and was named “Best American Play of 2011” by TIME magazine.

David Henry Hwang’s plays often explore the Asian American experience in contemporary society. He is the author of the Tony Award-winning M. Butterfly, a finalist for the 1988 Pulitzer Prize. Other plays include Golden Child, FOB, The Dance and the Railroad, Family Devotions and Pulitzer Prize-finalist, Yellow Face; his opera libretti include three works for composer Philip Glass. From 1994-2001, he served an appointment of President Clinton on the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

On Monday, February 13, 2012, The Cornelia Street Café presents HAPPY BIRTHDAY LANGSTON HUGHES at 29 Cornelia St in New York at 6pm. Actors Denise Burse, Michael Early and Phillip James Brannon, along with soprano Malesha Jessie and pianist Ellen Mandel are featured in this ongoing series celebrating the birthdays of poets with words and music. Denise Burse is most recently known for her recurring role as Claretha Jenkins on Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” She can be seen in Bruce Beresford’s upcoming film Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding, starring Jane Fonda. Ms. Burse has worked on most of the daytime and nighttime series shot in New York. Her theatre credits stretch from Broadway to Off Off Broadway and most regional theatres in between. Her theatre performances have garnered her three Audelco nominations, a Theatre World Award and an Audelco Award all for best performance by a female in a lead role.

Michael Early most recently appeared as the Duke of Exeter in Henry V with the Classical Theatre of Harlem. He has worked extensively Off-Broadway, in regional theatre and on television. Michael received a 2011 Audio Publishers Association Award for his work on Here in Harlem: Poems in Many Voices by Walter Dean Myers. He can be heard on numerous projects with Recorded Books and Wide Iris Productions. His short film, A Bed-Stuy Xmas, In Search of Home will be released this summer. Currently on the faculty at Sarah Lawrence College, Mr. Early is a graduate of Yale School of Drama.

Phillip James Brannon – was last seen in Booty Candy, written & directed by Robert O’Hara (Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Washington D.C.); Chicago credits: As You Like It, Richard III, Macbeth, Amadeus (Chicago Shakespeare Theater); Joan Dark (co-production with Linz ‘09 Festival), The Ballad of Emmett Till, The Cook, Oedipus Compex, A Christmas Carol (Goodman Theatre); Titus Andronicus (Court Theatre); Elmina’s Kitchen (Congo Square Theatre); An Immigrant Class (Remy Bumppo Theatre); Film credit: Contagion. Brannon is a member of SAG and received his BFA in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University.

Malesha Jessie, soprano is a native of Los Angeles, CA. Engagements include performances with the American Symphony, Boston Pops Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera and San Francisco Opera.

Ellen Mandel has created music for over fifty plays, at the Jean Cocteau Rep, Mint, Arkansas Rep, Riverside Shakespeare, Asolo, Tennessee Rep. She has scored four films, and released four CDs: a wind has blown the rainaway, her E.E. Cummings songs, the first of all mydreams, songs to poems by Cummings, Seamus Heaney, WB Yeats,and others, Every Play’s an Opera, theatre music,and Pamela Bob Sings the Mandel and Lydon Songbook, which includes settings of Wallace Stevens and Cummings, and some ofher own lyrics, as well as songs by Michael Lydon. Malesha Jessie has recorded four of her songs. Ellen’s current NYC shows: Rutherford and Son at the Mint, Agamemnon and Rumpelstiltskin, at the Phoenix Theatre in March.

Paul Hecht is a regular contributor to the intellectual stimulation at the Cafe and has assembled literary/musical events honoring such poets as Shakespeare, Pablo Neruda, Hart Crane, Sylvia Plath, John Milton, Edna St Vincent Millay, Tennyson, Ogden Nash, Emily Dickinson, Sholem Aleichem and Anne Sexton.

Raul Aranas, Kate Baldwin, P.J. Griffith, Dee Hoty, Aaron Lazar and Katie Thompson are set for Giant, a co-production of the Dallas Theater Center and The Public Theater, which runs at the Wyly Theatre located in the AT&T Performing Arts Center, 2400 Flora Street in Dallas, from January 18 – February 19, 2012. Opening night is Friday, January 27 at 8:00 p.m.

Three-time Tony nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Grey Gardens, Next to Normal) helms Giant, the sprawling, epic love story with larger-than-life characters and Texas-size musical numbers, written by Michael John LaChiusa (music and lyrics) and Sybille Pearson, and based on the classic novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edna Ferber.

Aaron Lazar, who has appeared in seven Broadway productions including A Tale of Two Cities, Impressionism, The Light in the Piazza, and the recent revival of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, stars as Texas cattleman Bick. Lazar was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his role in the revival of Les Miserables and can now be seen in Clint Eastwood’s film J. Edgar.

P.J. Griffith


Kate Baldwin, a Tony Award nominee for Finian’s Rainbow, plays his socialite wife Leslie. Baldwin has appeared on Broadway in The Full Monty, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Wonderful Town, and has performed at theaters across the country.

P.J. Griffith, who recently starred in the original Broadway production of American Idiot and is the lead vocalist for the band Blue Movie, portrays young oil tycoon Jett.

New York stage veteran Raul Aranas, who has appeared on Broadway in Miss Saigon, The King and I, Loose Ends and Flower Drum Song, plays Polo. Aranas is fresh from starring as The Engineer in the Ogunquit Playhouse production of Miss Saigon, and during his stint as The Engineer in the 1st National Company, he received a Helen Hayes Award, the Carbonell Award and a Jefferson Award Nomination. His turn as The Reciter in the North Shore Theatre production of Pacific Overtures, garnered him an Irne Award. He has appeared in the films Burn After Reading, Afterwards, Buzzkill, JFK, Company Man, and on television on “Law And Order,” “Gideon Oliver,” “One Life To Live,” and “Bluebloods.”

The design team includes costume designer Jeff Mashie, who also worked with Greif on the Broadway and touring productions of Next to Normal, set designer Allen Moyer (Grey Gardens, Twelve Angry Men), lighting designer Ken Posner (Catch Me if You Can), sound designer Brian Ronan (The Book of Mormon, American Idiot) and choreographer Alex Sanchez.

All performances of Giant are at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre at the AT&T Performing Arts Center located at 2400 Flora St. in Dallas. Previews are January 18 – January 26, with an opening night set for Friday, January 27 at 8:00 p.m.

Performance times are Tuesday through Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.; and select Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 – $85 and are available online at www.DallasTheaterCenter.org or by phone at 214-880-0202. Lia Chang is an actor, performance and fine art botanical photographer, and an award-winning multimedia journalist.

As a photographer and videographer, Lia collaborates with artists, organizations and companies in establishing their documentary photo archive and social media presence. She has been documenting her colleagues and contemporaries in the arts, fashion and journalism since making her stage debut as Liat in the National Tour of South Pacific, with Robert Goulet and Barbara Eden. Lia currently plays Nurse Lia on “One Life to Live”. She has appeared in Wolf, New Jack City, A Kiss Before Dying, King of New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Last Dragon, Taxman and “New York Undercover”.

Selections of Lia’s archive of Asian Pacific Americans in the arts, fashion, journalism, politics and space are now in the newly created LIA CHANG THEATER PORTFOLIO in the ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN PERFORMING ARTS COLLECTION housed in the Library of Congress Asian Division’s Asian American Pacific Islander Collection.
