Hanami, Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Cherry Blossom Season, Begins

The Garden’s horticulture staff has observed the first flush of blossoms on the early-blooming Prunus sargentii ‘Fudan-zakura’—indicating Hanami has begun at Brooklyn Botanic Garden! Hanami, the Japanese cultural tradition of enjoying the cherry blossom season from first buds to lush flowers to multitudes of falling petals blanketing the ground, is one of the most extraordinary times of year at the Garden. More than 200 flowering cherry trees encompassing over twenty cultivars—the nation’s most diverse collection—provide a spectacular seasonal show that continuously unfolds over three to five weeks, depending on seasonal weather.

As Hanami progresses, the cherry display is tracked on BBG’s web-based CherryWatch feature, which maps the main part of the collection and provides a daily blooming status for each tree as well as photos of and detailed information about each cultivar. This year, the Garden encourages visitors to share their own cherry blossom images—amateur or professional—on social media including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook using the hashtag #bbgcherries. Photographers can also post images in BBG’s visitor photo pool on Flickr.

During Hanami, the Garden offers special programs including:
Free tours (April 3–24 on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m.) focusing on BBG’s Japanese plant collections and specialty gardens, including cherry trees, the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, and the Tree Peony Collection.

Hanami culminates in the Garden’s legendary weekend festival Sakura Matsuri—popularly considered New York’s rite of spring. A celebration of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, Sakura Matsuri (April 27 and 28, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) features over 60 performances, demonstrations, and exhibits—many of which are specially commissioned for this dynamic festival—and attracts one of the largest, most colorful audiences for any cultural event in the city.

Sakura Park Plaque Celebrating the Gift of Cherry Blossoms to New York to be installed on City College of New York Campus on April 13, 2013

On Saturday, April 13, 2013 in partnership with City College of New York and the Japanese community, Voza Rivers/New Heritage Theatre Group will present a commemorative program and installation of a recast of the original 1912 plaque that was originally installed in Sakura Park but has been missing for many years. This year’s Ceremony will be held at 10AM at the North Quad, of the City College of New York, located on Convent Avenue @ 139th Street [Directly Opposite the Shepard Hall Building] New York, NY. All are welcome.

The commemorative program and ceremony will be followed by an announcement from two Tokyo organizations, Kasumi Kaikan and International Landscape Gardening of Japan regarding the future planting of two cherry blossom trees: one in tribute to Townsend Harris who was the founder of City College and also the first Consul General to the Empire of Japan in July 1856, and credited as the first diplomat to open the Empire of Japan to foreign trade and culture in the Edo period. The second tree will honor Dr. Jokichi Takamine, founder of the Nippon Club, who arranged in 1912 to donate 2000 cherry trees to what was then known as Claremont Park, owned by the Rockefeller family, and then name changed to Sakura Park, in grateful recognition of Dr. Takmine’s efforts to further friendly relations between Japan and United States.

The Kasumi Kaikan is made up of 950 eldest sons and grandsons of Japan’s old nobility. Kasumi Kaikan’s objectives include practical economic social and cultural research from a global view point, the promotion of traditional Japanese culture and development of social welfare. The International Landscape Gardening Organization in Japan is a multi-national group organized to accomplish the overall and common goal of spreading the benefits of Japanese gardening for individuals, groups, communities, and society.

Last year as part of the 100th Anniversary of the gift of cherry blossom trees to New York from Japan, New Heritage Theatre Group, (est. 1964) the oldest not for profit black theater in New York City, produced the Sakura Cherry Blossom Festival in Sakura Park and US Grant Memorial Park in Harlem, New York City.

Mu Daiko Performs at The Cowles Center in Minneapolis, November 8-11, 2012

Mu Daiko, Minnesota’s premier taiko drumming ensemble, performs in The Goodale Theater of The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, Thursday, November 8 – Sunday, November 11, 2012 (Preview, Nov. 8 at 7:30 pm). The concert is directed by Mu Daiko Artistic Director Iris Shiraishi, who has led the ensemble since 2011. The concert also marks the last taiko concert with Rick Shiomi as Artistic Director of Mu Performing Arts, and Shiraishi has created a medley of works composed by Shiomi in his honor. Rick Shiomi steps down as Mu’s Artistic Director in August of 2013. Audiences are invited to a pre-show reception on opening night (Friday, November 9 at 6pm) to honor Shiomi’s contribution to taiko in Minnesota. The reception will take place in The Cowles Center lobby and will feature The McKnight Foundation’s Vickie Benson who will speak about Mu’s impact on the local arts community.

Founded in early 1997 by Shiomi, Mu Daiko’s first performance was at the Lyn-Lake Festival. Since then, Mu Daiko has attracted a loyal and expanding audience with its annual concerts and has been instrumental in bringing nationally-renowned taiko artists to the Twin Cities, including Kenny Endo, the San Francisco Taiko Dojo, On Ensemble, Fubuki Daiko, and Kaoru Watanabe. Mu Daiko members have performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, around the state, and across the country. Highlights include the National Taiko Conference (L.A., 2005), the Southern Arizona Taiko Showcase (Tucson, 2006), the Powell Street Festival (Vancouver, 2006), and Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, 2007). Earlier this year, Mu Daiko celebrated its 15th Anniversary with a record-setting concert and Minnesota tour featuring guest artists, Hanayui, from Japan.

About Mu Daiko
Mu Daiko was founded in early 1997 by Mu Performing Arts Artistic Director Rick Shiomi. Shiomi began his taiko career with Katari Taiko in Vancouver in the late 1970s, and has also studied and performed with the San Francisco Taiko Dojo under Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka, New York’s Soh Daiko, and Wasabi Daiko of Toronto. His initial classes attracted students from both Mu actors and the general public, culminating in Mu Daiko’s first performance in August 1997 at the Lyn-Lake Festival. The professional taiko ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary works, ranging from traditional taiko repertoire to original pieces composed by its members. The group regularly premieres new work at its annual performances, continuing to stretch the boundaries of the art form and contributing to the innovation of American taiko. Members participate in over 100 educational and concert performances annually for schools, community organizations, and corporations throughout Minnesota and the Midwest. Through studio classes and school residencies over the past decade, the Mu Performing Arts taiko program has taught thousands of students of all ages and abilities.

Part ghost story, part love story, TAKARAZUKA!!! tracks the career sunset of Yuko, the star of a Japanese theater that stages all-female Western style musical extravaganzas. But when you take away her partner, her fans, and her tux, who will she be?

SUSAN SOON HE STANTON’s plays include AMERICAN PIG PEN, CYGNUS, FURBALL, THE THINGS ARE AGAINST US, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JOHN BOY KIHANO?, THE UNDERNEATH, THE ART OF PRESERVATION and others. She is a member of The Public Theater’s Emerging Writer’s Group and Ma-Yi Playwrights Lab. Awards include the 2011 Van Lier Fellowship at The Lark, and The Sloan Foundation feature film development grant. MFA: Yale Playwriting. From Honolulu, Susan lives in New York City. This is Susan’s first NYC production.

LEAR deBESSONET Original works have been produced by Lincoln Center Theatre, the Old Globe Theatre, the Intiman Theatre, Joe’s Pub, and Performance Space 122. She has worked with writers Marcus Gardley, Naomi Iizuka, Todd Almond, Deborah Stein, and Lucy Thurber. She most recently conceived and directed ODYSSEY at the Old Globe, featuring a cast of nearly 200 performers including local choirs, marching bands, and park rangers.

Lia Chang: Brooklyn Botanic Garden Celebrates Hanami, the Cherry Blossom Season, Sunday, April 1–Sunday, April 29, 2012

From April 1 to 29, Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) celebrates Hanami, the Japanese cultural tradition of experiencing each moment of the cherry blossom season, from the first buds to the full canopy to the multitudes of falling blossoms blanketing the ground.

In Japan, long-established customs associated with Hanami include strolling among the trees and capturing falling cherry petals in open palms. Brooklyn Botanic Garden is the United States’ finest site to experience Hanami, with more Japanese flowering cherries in one place, and a more diverse collection of cherry cultivars, than anywhere in the world outside Japan.

During the Hanami season, visitors to BBG can enjoy several highlights inspired by its collection of over 220 flowering cherry trees:

Free Hanami tours (Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m.) focusing on BBG’s Japanese plant collections and specialty gardens, including the cherries, the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, and the Tree Peony Collection.
