Ghostlight Records Releases ‘Giant’ Original Cast Album Featuring Kate Baldwin, Brian d’Arcy James, P.J. Griffith, Raul Aranas, Katie Thompson and more

Last November, I caught the exquisite production of the New York Premiere of Giant at The Public Theater, a co-production with Dallas Theater Center, starring Brian d’Arcy James as Texas cattleman Bick Benedict, Kate Baldwin as his socialite wife Leslie Benedict, P.J. Griffith as young oil tycoon Jett Rink, Raul Aranas as Polo and Katie Thompson as Vashti. Helmed by Michael Grief, Giant features music and lyrics by Michael John LaChiusa, and a book by Sybille Pearson, based on the novel by Edna Ferber, with choreography by Alex Sanchez.

I was thrilled to hear the divine Katie Thompson’s rendition of “He Wanted A Girl,” with music and lyrics by Michael John LaChuisa, at the 58th annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony at Town Hall on May 19, 2013. At the after party at the Liberty Theatre, I chatted with Giant composer Michael John LaChuisa, and castmembers Katie Thompson and Isabel Santiago, who shared that the Ghostlight Records release of Giant’s Original Cast Recording is available online and in stores.

The two-disc cast album – produced by Kurt Deutsch, Joel Moss and Michael John LaChiusa – includes a 44 page, full-color booklet with the entire libretto and liner notes by Oskar Eustis, The Public Theater’s Artistic Director. GIANT boasts a company of 26 actors, a 17-piece orchestra, and lush orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin, with additional orchestrations by Larry Hochman.

This recording marks The Public’s fourth album in collaboration with Ghostlight Records, including the previously released Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Hair, and See What I Wanna See. This is also the label’s fifth album with Michael John LaChiusa (Queen of the Mist, See What I Wanna See, Bernarda Alba, and Little Fish). The GIANT original cast recording has been supported by the Shen Family Foundation. Two-Time Tony Nominee André De Shields, Nehal Joshi, Akash Chopra and More Set for Mary Zimmerman helmed The Jungle Book at The Goodman, 6/21-8/4 and The Huntington, 9/7-10/6

Two-time Tony nominee and Emmy Award winning actor André De Shields (The Full Monty, Play On!, The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’) stars as King Louie, the ambitious-but-scattered, comic, dreaming orangutan, in the Mary Zimmerman helmed production of The Jungle Book, a world premiere stage adaptation which premieres at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre on June 21, 2013 and has performances through August 4, 2013. The production will play at the Huntington in Boston from September 7 – October 6, 2013. Based on Nobel Laureate Rudyard Kipling’s 1893 collection of stories set in the Indian jungle and Walt Disney’s 1967 animated film, Zimmerman’s adaptation of The Jungle Book is a music- and movement-filled adventure of young Mowgli’s coming-of-age in the animal kingdom. The cast blends longtime Zimmerman collaborators with newcomers – including ten-year-old Akash Chopra as Mowgli, the young, spunky, and stubborn boy. Joining him will be Usman Ally (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity at Second Stage Theatre) as Bagheera, the wise old panther who is serious about the rules of life and the laws of the jungle; Elena Flores (The House on Mango Street at Steppenwolf Theatre Company) as Raksha, the warm, fawning Mother Wolf (replacing Anjali Bhimani who will appear in Chicago); Kevin Carolan (Newsies on Broadway) as Baloo the bear, the carefree and irresponsible tutor to Mowgli; Glory Curda as the Little Girl; Thomas Derrah of Boston (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the Huntington) as Kaa, the sinewy, serpentine sly-but-charming villain; Nehal Joshi (LES MISERABLES on Broadway) as Rama, a wolf leader; and Larry Yando (Candide at the Huntington) as Shere Khan the tiger, the crafty, powerful and dangerous arch-villain.

An ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers create Kipling’s “people of the jungle”- vultures, monkeys, elephants, wolves, and more-including Jeremy Duvall, Nikka Graff Lanzarone, Monique Haley, Ed Kross, Govind Kumar, Alka Nayyar, Geoff Packard (title role in Candide at the Huntington), Timothy Wilson, and Victor Wisehart.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be returning to Boston and then to Huntington,” says adaptor and director Zimmerman, whose 2011 production of Candide was the Huntington’s highest grossing musical in its 31-year history. “I love the theatre and its audience. Our challenge with this adaptation is to combine the profundity, beauty, and even strangeness of Kipling’s stories with the spirit and music of the film, which is all joy, joy, joy. I’m incredibly excited to work with this wildly talented ensemble of actors, singers, and dancers to create the world of the play. It is always joyful to reunite with many of my longtime collaborators, but it is also thrilling to add so many new voices into the fold.”

“Having worked with Mary on remounts of some of her very successful shows, I was excited for the opportunity to collaborate on a new work with her,” says Usman Ally. “Kipling’s stories as well as the Disney animation were quite a big part of my childhood, and it’s a unique position to be in working on the world premiere of the stage version. I’m looking forward to working with an ethnically and artistically diverse team in telling this story that is set in my parents’ part of the world.”

On collaborating with Zimmerman for the first time, André De Shields remarked, “I experienced Metamorphoses on Broadway in 2002, and was psychologically, emotionally, and physically mesmerized by the ease of the director’s ability to use the myths of the realm of the gods to decode the sometimes paralyzing riddles of the human condition. I sat entranced and thought, ‘I must work with this director.’ That director was Mary Zimmerman. And now with The Jungle Book, I am excited about the possibility of achieving something similar by using the myths of the natural world.”

André De Shields most recently appeared at the Goodman in Camino Real during the 2011/2012 Season. Previous Goodman credits include Play On! (Jeff Award; Black Theater Alliance Award) and Waiting for Godot. Other Chicago credits include The Gospel According to James at Victory Gardens Theater; Poe and Warp! at Organic Theater Company; Hair (professional debut) at the Shubert Theater and The Me Nobody Knows at Civic Stage. He has appeared on Broadway in Impressionism, Prymate (Drama Desk Award nomination), The Full Monty (Tony Award nomination), Play On! (Tony Award nomination), Ain’t Misbehavin’ (Drama Desk Award nomination) and The Wiz. Mr. De Shields’ off-Broadway credits include Knock Me a Kiss (Audelco Award for Best Actor) at the New Federal Theatre and The Bacchae at the New York Shakespeare Festival. He has appeared on film in Extreme Measures, and his television credits include ‘Law & Order,’ “Sex and the City,” “Lipstick Jungle,” “Life on Mars,” “Rescue Me,” “Cosby” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (Emmy Award). Mr. De Shields won a Jeff Award for Best Director for The Colored Museum at Victory Gardens Theater, and was the choreographer for Bette Midler and the Harlettes at The Happy Medium. The Jungle Book is produced by special arrangement with Disney Theatrical Productions, which proudly supports Zimmerman’s development of this title, providing financial support, creative consultation, and access to song material never before heard onstage. “Working with Mary Zimmerman as she and her astonishing team begin to bring the show to life has been a joy,” said Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions. “As this cast of world-class stage actors proves, she has always attracted the very best theatre collaborators and we cannot wait to see what they’ll conjure.”

Legendary Academy Award and Grammy winner Richard M. Sherman is collaborating on this production, providing Doug Peck (Music Director, Piano, and Harmonium) access and permission to adapt beloved songs that Sherman and his brother, Robert, wrote for the film, unused songs written for the film, plus new lyrics written for this production.

“Favorites like ‘The Bare Necessities’ and ‘Trust in Me’ will make great appearances,” says Peck, who attended two music festivals while in India to explore the country’s Northern Classical/Hindustani and Southern Classical/Carnatic traditions. “‘Colonel Hathi’ will probably feel like a musical/dance highlight-one of the biggest moments-and ‘Baloo’s Blues’ will be the debut of a new piece of material. The all-new orchestration includes a blend of Western instruments (piano, bass, drums, trumpet, trombone, tuba, flute, clarinet, saxophone) and traditional Indian instruments (harmonium, sitar, veena, tablas, tanpura, ghatam, Carnatic violin).

Eight musicians from the Chicago production will travel to Boston with Peck to play in the 12-member orchestra that will feature a blend of jazz and Indian instruments: Victor Garcia (Trumpet); Shivalik Ghoshal (Tabla); Ronnie Malley (Percussion); Nick Moran (Woodwinds); Saraswathi Ranganathan (Veena); and Anuradha Sridhar (Violin). A sitar player will join the orchestra, along with a drummer/percussionist, a trombonist); a bassist; and a woodwinds player.

The creative team also includes Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli (Broadway’s Newsies – also Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards), who will work with choreographer/dancer Hema Rajagopalan, (founder and artistic director of Chicago’s Natya Dance Theatre) to combine elements of classical Indian dance forms with jazz, tap, and other types of movement to enhance the storytelling.

Scenic Designer Daniel Ostling, Costume Designer Mara Blumenfeld, and Lighting Designer T.J. Gerckens-each of whom have collaborated with Zimmerman over the past two decades on a wide range of projects in theatre (Candide at the Huntington, Arabian Nights, Metamorphoses, and more) and opera (Lucia di Lammermoor and La Sonnambula for The Metropolitan Opera)-reconvene to create Mowgli’s world on stage.

“Our set will have elements that are familiar to the audiences who know The Jungle Book but, at the same time, will be a world completely different from what they may be expecting,” said Ostling. “Our India trip informed many of the choices we’re making; we’re trying to capture the riot of color, sound, and visual stimuli that come at you from every direction when you walk down the street. We want to take the audience on a beautiful visual and musical trip.”

Of the costumes, Blumenfeld said, “The challenge is how to represent a world of characters that are animals. We’ve been very inspired by Kipling’s description of the animals as ‘people’-Wolf People, the Monkey People, the Snake People, etc.-and many descriptions of their physical attributes are in human terms-Bagheera’s ‘black watermarked silk coat’ or Kaa ‘shedding his skin like a tight-fitting jacket.’ So, inspired by clothing from the rich traditions of India (and the British presence in India during the time of Kipling’s youth) we hope to give each group of animals their own distinct look and a very human element.”

Here Lies Love, Starring Jose Llana and Ruthie Ann Miles, Extends at The Public through July 28, 2013

I’ll be seeing the critically acclaimed world premiere musical Here Lies Love, with concept and lyrics by David Byrne, music by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, additional music by Tom Gandey and J Pardo, and choreography by Annie-B Parson on June 9. Helmed by Alex Timbers, Here Lies Love officially opened on Tuesday, April 23 and has been extended a fourth and final time to Sunday, July 28. The award-winning musical must close to make room for another Public Theater show beginning in the fall. Here Lies Love is a fully immersive, 360-degree theatrical experience, all filtered through the remarkable vision of David Byrne, one of the great American artists of the last half century. Within a pulsating dance club atmosphere, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim deconstruct the astonishing journey of Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos, retracing her meteoric rise to power and subsequent descent into infamy and disgrace at the end of the People Power Revolution. Here Lies Love is neither a period piece nor a biography, neither a play nor a traditional musical but an immersive theatrical event combining songs influenced by four decades of dance music, adrenaline-fueled choreography, and a remarkable 360-degree scenic and video environment to go beyond Imelda’s near-mythic obsession with shoes and explore the tragic consequences of the abuse of power.

Alex Timbers (Director). For The Public, Timbers wrote the book and directed the critically acclaimed musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. He will also direct The Public’s upcoming production of Love’s Labour’s Lost, A New Musical for Shakespeare in the Park in July. Timbers is the Artistic Director of Les Freres Corbusier and his additional Broadway credits include Peter and the Starcatcher, The Pee-Wee Herman Show, and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, which earned him a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical. His additional Off-Broadway directing credits include A Very Merry Unauthorized Pageant; Gutenberg! The Musical!; and Hell House. He is a Tony-nominated writer-director and is the recipient of Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, as well as two Obie Awards.

David Byrne (Concept, Music, Lyrics). Known as the force behind Talking Heads and later as creator of the highly-regarded record-label Luaka Bop, David Byrne also works as a photographer, film director, author, and solo artist; he has published and exhibited visual art for more than a decade. Among Byrne’s works are Playing the Building, an interactive sound installation at New York’s Battery Maritime Building and London’s Roundhouse; Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, Byrne’s first collaboration with co-writer Brian Eno since 1981′s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts; a series of unique bike racks installed throughout New York City in conjunction with the New York City Department of Transportation; Bicycle Diaries, a chronicle of David’s travels on his bicycle published by Viking Press and available as an audio book featuring narration and original music by Byrne; Talking Heads: Chronology, a DVD featuring live performances spanning 1976-1983; a soundwork created while in residence at Living Architecture and Artangel’s A Room for London installation; and a collaboration with Will Oldham for the soundtrack to the new Sean Penn film This Must be the Place. Most recently Love This Giant, Byrne’s collaboration with St. Vincent was released on September 11 and his latest book How Music Works was published on September 12 by McSweeney’s.

FATBOY SLIM (Music), also known Norman Cook, is a Grammy Award-winning DJ, musician and record producer. He first rose to prominence in the 1980s as a bassist of the indie rock band The Housemartins, and went on to form the band, Beats International. In 1996, as Fatboy Slim, he released Better Living Through Chemistry, and his follow up successes include You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby, and Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars. These albums helped to popularize the “big beat” genre which achieved mainstream popularity in the 90s. In 2008, along with David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal, they released a collaboration entitled The Brighton Port Authority. His additional credits with David Byrne include the concept album, Here Lies Love.

Annie-B Parson (Choreographer) is a founder of Big Dance Theater with Molly Hickok and Paul Lazar. She has choreographed and co-created over 15 works for the company, ranging from pure dance pieces, to adaptations of plays and literature, to original works combining wildly disparate materials. Her work with Big Dance has been commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy Of Music, The National Theater of Paris/Chaillot, The Japan Society, The Walker Art Center, and has performed in scores of other venues. Her awards include a 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography, 2002 and 2010 BESSIE awards, two Lucille Lortel nominations, and NYFA Fellowships in 2005 and 2000. BDT received an OBIE in 2000 and the first Creativity Award from Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 2007. She has been nominated for the CalArts/Alpert Award seven times. Ms. Parson was a YCC choreographer at The American Dance Festival where she worked with composer Richard Einhorn to create City of Brides. Outside of Big Dance, Ms. Parson created choreography for David Byrne in 2008/09 for his world tour. She directed and choreographed for the string quartet ETHEL in their first foray into dance. This piece premiered, and was then remounted at the Winter Garden. She created two works for The Othershore dance company that were seen at Ringling Festival and BAC. Her dances are featured in the film Ride, Roar, Rise about David Byrne. She choreographed for Nico Muhly’s new opera Dark Sisters, Sarah Ruhl’s Orlando, Futurity at ART, and The Broken Heart at TFNA. Since 1993 Parson has been an instructor of choreography at New York University’s Experimental Theater Wing. She has also taught nationally and internationally including Tokyo and Spoleto, Italy. She was featured in BOMB magazine, and wrote a piece for Dance USA on the state of dance/theater in the U.S. As an artist curator, she has curated shows including: the Merce Cunningham memorial, Dancer Crush at NYLA and Sourcing Stravinsky at DTW. Parson tours a lecture on abstraction called “The Structure of Virtuosity” to universities and for audience development.

RENEE ALBULARIO (Ensemble) has appeared regionally in Hairspray, The King and I, Adventures from Ezra Jack Keats, Nate the Great, The Ballad of Noah’s Ark, Radiant Baby, The Sound of Plaid, and Unholy Acts, among others. Her television credits include “One Life to Live” and “Guiding Light.”

Melody Butiu (Ensemble) has appeared regionally in Euripides’ Helen, A Little Night Music, Calligraphy, Nightmare Alley, Long Story Short, A View of the Harbor, and Language Rooms. Her film and television credits include Untold, Blood Ransom, “True Blood,” “Melissa and Joey,” “No Ordinary Family,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Modern Family.”

Natalie Cortez (Ensemble) recently appeared at The Public Theater in the new musical Giant. Her Broadway credits include West Side Story and A Chorus Line. Her additional Off-Broadway credits include Fame on 42nd Street and Sid. Regionally, she has appeared in Giant, In The Heights, The Mambo Kings, and Pippin.

DEBRALEE DACO (Ensemble) has toured nationally in Miss Saigon. Her additional theater credits include Where Elephants Weep, Nawala, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. She also appeared on film in Farm Girl in New York and When Things Get Fishy.

Joshua Dela Cruz (Ensemble) has appeared in City Center’s Encores! production of Merrily We Roll Along. His regional credits include The King and I, Suburbia, Cats, Cabaret, and Elmer Gantry.

Jose Llana (Ferdinand Marcos) has appeared at The Public in On the Town and Saturn Returns. His Broadway credits include Wonderland, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Flower Drum Song, Rent, Streetcorner Symphony, and The King and I. He has also appeared Off-Broadway in Falling For Eve. His film and television credits include Hitch, Unconscious, and “Sex and the City.”

Kelvin Moon Loh (Ensemble) has appeared in the first national tour of American Idiot. His additional New York theater credits include Barcode, Heading East, and Oklahoma! He has appeared regionally in Miss Saigon, The King and I, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Paint Your Wagon, and A Christmas Carol. His film credits include Clear Blue Tuesday and The Lamp Post.

Jeigh Madjus (Ensemble) has appeared in the first national tour of La Cages Aux Folles. His additional regional credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Altar Boyz, Peter Pan, Scrooge, Myths and Hymns, Berlin to Broadway, The Who’s Tommy, and Anything Goes. His film and television credits include Servitude and “Pop Stars: Boy Meets Girl.”

Ruthie Ann Miles (Imelda Marcos) has appeared Off-Broadway in Avenue Q and toured nationally in Sweeney Todd and Annie. Her additional New York credits include Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd and CHIX 6. Her regional credits include Band Geeks, Two By Two, On Dragonfly Wings, Miss Saigon and Cabaret.

Maria-Christina Oliveras (Ensemble) has appeared at The Public and on Broadway in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. Her additional New York credits include The Really Big Once, Slavey, Night Sky, Lonnie-Jake, and The Crazy Locomotive. Her film and television credits include Vamperifica; “Ugly Betty”; “Nurse Jackie”; and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

Conrad Ricamora (Aquino) has appeared regionally in Alexander’s Not Going to Move, Annie Get Your Gun, Kiss Me Kate, The Music Man, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, among others. He appeared on film in Tallageda Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby with Will Ferrell.

TREVOR SALTER (Ensemble) has appeared Off-Broadway in Revolting Rhymes. His additional theater credits include Wake Up!; Marat/Sade; Political Shorts; The Last Days of Judas Iscariot; Paradise Lost; Dead Boy; Hit It and Quit It: A Love Story; Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Byte; Proprioception; and Brechtfast at Tiffany’s; among others.

JANELLE VELASQUEZ (Ensemble) has appeared in New York in Iphigenia at Aulis. Her regional credits include The King and I; South Pacific; Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular; Songs for a New World; The Corruption of Hadleyburg; and West Side Story. She has appeared on television in “CSI: Miami.”

Completed in October 2012, the revitalization of The Public Theater’s downtown home at Astor Place physically manifests the Company’s core mission of sparking new dialogues and increasing accessibility for artists and audiences by dramatically opening up its landmark building to the street and community, and transforming the lobby into a public piazza for artists, students, and audiences. Designed by Ennead Architects and constructed by Westerman Construction, the project encompasses enhancements to the building’s interior and exterior while preserving the historic structure. Key elements of the design include infrastructure updates to the 158-year old building, as well as construction of new exterior entry stair and glass canopy; installation of ramps for improved accessibility; an expanded and refurbished lobby; the addition of a mezzanine level with a new lounge, The Library, designed by the Rockwell Group; expansion and remodeling of restroom facilities; and comprehensive exterior restoration, ensuring stability of the landmark façade.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, The Public Theater is the only theater in New York that produces Shakespeare and the classics, musicals, contemporary and experimental pieces in equal measure. The Public continues the work of its visionary founder, Joe Papp, by acting as an advocate for the theater as an essential cultural force, and leading and framing dialogue on some of the most important issues of our day. Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for nearly 60 years, today the Company engages audiences in a variety of venues-including its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, which houses five theaters and Joe’s Pub; the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to its beloved, free Shakespeare in the Park; and the Mobile Unit, which tours Shakespearean productions for underserved audiences throughout New York City’s five boroughs. The Public’s wide range of programming includes free Shakespeare in the Park, the bedrock of the Company’s dedication to making theater accessible to all, new and experimental stagings at The Public at Astor Place, and a range of artist and audience development initiatives including its Public Forum series, which brings together theater artists and professionals from a variety of disciplines for discussions that shed light on social issues explored in Public productions. The Public Theater is located on property owned by the City of New York and receives annual support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. The LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust provides leadership support for The Public Theater’s year-round activities.

I had a grand time at the 58th Annual Drama Desk Awards presented by TheaterMania.com at Town Hall on Sunday, May 19, 2013, with Jeanne Sakata and her husband, Tim Patterson. The pair had flown in from LA to celebrate Joel de la Fuente, the star of Sakata’s one-man show Hold These Truths, directed by Lisa Rothe and produced Off-Broadway by the Epic Theatre Ensemble last Fall, who had been nominated in the category of “Outstanding Solo Performance”. Jeanne Sakata’s critically-acclaimed play Hold These Truths, starring 2013 Drama Desk Award Nominee Joel de la Fuente, is set for the 10th Annual soloNOVA Arts Festival at Culture Project, 6/4, 6/10 and 6/11

Founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring together critics and writers in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York, Drama Desk began presenting its awards in 1955, and it is the only critics’ organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition among Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.

The 58th Annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony streamed live on Theatermania.com, with co-hosting duties shared by Billy Army, Audrey Lynn Weston, Todd Susman and Marilyn Sokol from the cast of Old Jews Telling Jokes. The show opened with Hands on a Hardbody (Music by Trey Anastasio and Amanda Green, Lyrics by Amanda Green).

FALU Celebrates “Foras Road” CD Release at Highline Ballroom in New York on May 29, 2013

India born, New York-based songstress Falu will celebrate the release of Foras Road, her latest CD produced by Grammy-Award winning producer Danny Blume (Jewel, Lisa Loeb), at New York City’s Highline Ballroom, 431 W 16th St. (btwn.9th & 10th Ave), on May 29, 2013. Falu will be welcoming ONE, an active community committed to fighting extreme poverty around the world. Her opening acts will feature the fantastic sounds of Slavic Soul Party (Balkan Funk Brass Band) and Zikrayat (Arabic music and dance ensemble). It will be a night to dance to truly amazing music from around the globe! Showtime is @ 7:30 PM, doors open @ 6:00 PM. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day of show. Taking its name from the oldest red-light district in the Indian city of Mumbai, Foras Road captures the enduring musical traditions and cultural history of India’s centuries-old brothels. Singing in seven different South Asian languages throughout the album, Falu blends Indian classical and folk music with her own original compositions, plus adds a modern flare of acoustic instrumentation. Each song explores themes of womanhood, romance, longing, love, and loss, while shedding light on the hardships of being a courtesan during those times. Soon after moving to the States, the critically-lauded singer recorded and performed alongside a wide array of artists including: A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), Yo-Yo Ma (in The Silk Road Project), Philip Glass, Wyclef Jean, her mentor Ustad Sultan Khan, Blues Traveler, and Bernie Worrell (Parliament Funkadelic). Her songs have also been featured in multiple blockbuster films, including Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut A Place in Time.

Live, Falu delivers captivating performances. She has sparked the interest of all types of music enthusiasts, pleased the toughest of critics, and performed nationally on FOX TV and internationally on National Geographic TV. She has also sung at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center – a special performance for the Dalai Lama – and The White House for President Obama’s first State Dinner in honor of the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

One of Falu’s most stunning performances was at the Time 100 Gala where she performed a duet with Slumdog Millionaire composer A.R. Rahman in front of the one hundred of Time Magazine’s most influential people in the world, which included First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
