If you are an Audrey Hepburn fan like I am, you will love Charmed by Audrey: Life on the set of Sabrina, a divine coffee table photography book by Juliet Cuming Shaw, filled with photographs by Cuming’s father-in-law, famed fashion and celebrity photographer Mark Shaw.
In 1953, Shaw, who shot for Life magazine, had an all-access pass to photographing Audrey on the Paramount set of Bill Wilder’s Sabrina, one of my favorite films. Shooting over 60 rolls of film on and around the set during the weeks he spent with the star, he created an amazing array of photos that captured the budding ingénue’s charm and grace. The images chronicled Hepburn waking up at home, having her hair washed at the beauty parlor, reading, relaxing, studying the script, chatting with her costars and director Billy Wilder, and acting in one of her most famous roles. Though the handful of photographs published in Life for the Sabrina article have become iconic images of Hepburn, the majority of the negatives were misplaced and never published. Rediscovered 50 years later, these candid and intimate photographs offer a stunning visual biography of Hepburn’s youth and rising star.
A special series of Mark Shaw non-edition archive prints of Audrey Hepburn, photographed by Mark Shaw for Life magazine are available for purchase by clicking here.
